LiDAR is used for a number of different applications, from autonomous mobile robot (AMR) navigation to pallet detection to height detection. For detection and ranging applications, LiDAR sensors, such as the ones in the TiM series from SICK, are a highly efficient solution for both tasks. The LiDAR sensors of the TiM series are based on the laser scanner principle and use time-of-flight measurement.

In detection tasks, the TiM series is used primarily to detect whether or not an object is located in a defined scanning field. This could be detecting for empty bays in an ASRS or in AMR applications to prevent vehicle collisions. For ranging applications, LiDAR system like the TiM series enables users to determine the exact position of an object in the scanning field and create a point cloud for an accurate map of the scanned area.
